The SPRSI was formally organized on March 15, 1898, by a group of Portuguese Catholic women under the initiative of Mrs. Rosa M. Oliveira. Initially, it functioned as an altar society focused on maintaining and caring for the church altar. However, by 1900, it evolved into a district entity named "Council Santa Isabel," marking its first council as No. 1 of the SPRSI. Over time, the society became known for its motto, "Charity, Sociability and Protection," reflecting the virtues of St. Isabel.

Tradition and Legacy

St. Isabel of Portugal was a beloved figure known for her kindness and miracles, notably the legend of the roses. According to tradition, she would secretly feed the poor by carrying bread under her cloak. When confronted by her husband, King Dinis, she claimed she was carrying roses. Miraculously, roses appeared, symbolizing her devotion to the poor and her faith. This legend has inspired numerous charitable works and festivals, such as the traditional Festas do Espírito Santo in the Azores.

Merger and Current Status

In 2008, the Sociedade Portuguesa Rainha Santa Isabel merged with Luso-American Financial (now known as Luso-American Financial, Inc.), becoming part of the largest Portuguese fraternal network in the United States. This merger marked a significant milestone in the organization's history, aligning its cultural and charitable mission with a broader, more integrated community-focused framework.
