California’s In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program is a lifeline for thousands of families in our region — providing essential personal care and support that allows our loved ones with autism and other disabilities to live independently and with dignity in their own homes. Yet Governor Newsom’s recently unveiled May Revision to the 2025–26 state budget threatens the very foundation of IHSS by reinstating punitive asset limits, freezing enrollment, imposing new premiums on immigrants, and eliminating IHSS benefits for individuals without “satisfactory immigration status.” If enacted, these changes would: Force families into greater poverty by demanding that disabled adults and seniors reduce their savings below $2,000 (or $3,000 per couple) just to maintain benefits. Cut off new participants—including children, adults, and seniors who need IHSS support—by freezing all enrollments. Erect financial barriers for immigrant Californians, imposing premiums and stripping IHSS access from those who contribute to our communities. These measures will not balance the budget — they will dismantle a program that keeps people safe, healthy, and connected to their families. They threaten to push our neighbors into institutional care, emergency rooms, and homelessness, undoing years of progress toward compassionate, community-based supports. Why IHSS Matters to the Autism Community For families raising a child or adult with autism, IHSS provides critical services that range from feeding, bathing, and medication assistance to transportation for medical appointments and community inclusion. Without IHSS: Parents and siblings may be forced to quit their jobs or reduce hours to become unpaid caregivers. Vulnerable individuals lose the support they need for everyday activities—and their independence. Our community’s health care system bears the burden of increased institutionalization and crisis care. Join Our Campaign: Protect IHSS, Protect Our Families We cannot allow Washington and Sacramento to sacrifice our essential supports in the name of short-term savings. Here’s how you can help right now: 1. Contact Your State Legislators Urge them to oppose the reinstatement of the Medi-Cal asset limit. Demand they vote against enrollment freezes, new premiums, and benefit eliminations. Find your representatives and reach out: https://www.votervoice.net/AutismSociety/Campaigns/126899/Respond 2. Sign the Autism Society San Diego Petition Add your name to our letter calling on Governor Newsom and the Legislature to preserve full IHSS funding and eligibility for all Californians. Sign today HERE: https://tinyurl.com/yc7xaa6d 3. Share Your Story on Social Media Post a brief note or video explaining how IHSS has supported your family. Use hashtags #ProtectIHSS, #CaliforniansCare, and tag @AutismSanDiego. Every call, signature, and shared story makes a difference. In the coming weeks, the Legislature will debate these budget proposals — and we must flood their offices with our voices. Together, we can ensure that IHSS remains a robust, equitable program that honors the dignity and autonomy of every Californian, regardless of disability, income, or immigration status. (fb)
