Today we remember White Mountain Apache Tribal Police Department, Tribal Police Officer Adrian Lopez, Sr., end of watch Thursday, June 2, 2022. Officer Lopez was shot and killed during a traffic stop on East Fork Road in Whiteriver, Arizona. An altercation occurred between Officer Lopez and the driver when Officer Lopez was fatally shot. The subject then stole Officer Lopez's patrol vehicle and fled the scene with other White Mountain Apache Police in pursuit. The pursuit traveled almost 40 miles before officers and the subject exchanged gunfire near Hawley Lake. Another officer was wounded and the subject was killed. Gone but not forgotten. (fb)

Today we remember Tucson Police Department Officer Erik David Hite end of watch Monday, June 2, 2008. Officer Hite succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained the previous day by a suspect who had wounded a Pima County Sheriff's Office deputy. Members of the Tucson Police Department spotted the vehicle a short time later and continued pursuing it even as the suspect continued to fire at them. The suspect then turned off of Tanque Verde Road onto Tomahawk Trail, where he stopped his vehicle and set up an ambush. As Officer Hite turned the corner onto the street, the suspect opened fire from a distance of approximately 80 yards, striking Officer Hite. Gone but not forgotten. (fb)
