From 1982-2024 non-profit Hilton Pond Center at York SC was the most active year-round bird banding station in the Carolinas. Operations have been moved to Hilton Pond North near Lansing in upper Ashe County NC. Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History is the most active bird banding site in the Carolinas. The Center's Web site includes informative text and photographs of flora and fauna that can be found in most habitats in the eastern U.S. Included are descriptions of the Center's long-term bird banding research projects (including Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in Costa Rica) and "This Week at Hilton Pond," a fascinating pictorial account of natural changes through the seasons. Teachers, students, parents, birders, citizen scientists, and conservationists will find this site to be a rich source of information about all sorts of nature topics.

When we moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains near Lansing we knew we'd probably have bears so we're not surprised these big furry beasts have been present this spring. "This Week at Hilton Pond North" our videos reveal how much trouble bears have been for our research. As always we include lists of birds banded or recaptured during the period, plus nature notes.
