History And Culture Azerbaijan has a rich history and culture with evidence of human habitation dating back to the Stone Age. The country has been ruled by various empires and dynasties throughout its history including the Persians the Ottomans and the Russians. In 1918 Azerbaijan declared its independence from Russia becoming the first Muslimmajority democratic republic in the world.
