Primarily Possums
Primarily Possums, Inc. is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. Based in Northeast Georgia, it focuses primarily on opossums, as well as other small mammals such as bats, bunnies, and armadillos.
History and Mission
The organization was founded by Suzie DeGrasse, who began her journey in wildlife rehabilitation by volunteering at AWARE in Lithonia, Georgia, in 2014. DeGrasse acquired her rehabilitation permits in 2015 and formally established Primarily Possums as a nonprofit in 2021. The mission of Primarily Possums is to rescue, rehabilitate, release, and support the injured and orphaned native wildlife of Northeast Georgia, providing educational services to the local community.
Activities
- Species Focus: While the organization's name highlights opossums, it also accepts other small mammals like bats and bunnies, excluding raccoons and squirrels.
- Rehabilitation and Release: All animals are cared for until they are healthy enough to be returned to the wild.
- Educational Services: The organization aims to educate the public on wildlife conservation and how to interact safely with wildlife.
Founder
Suzie DeGrasse, the founder of Primarily Possums, holds a Master’s in Library and Information Science. Her background in information science aids in managing patient records and sharing knowledge about wildlife care. Her experience began under the guidance of mentors at AWARE and includes learning specialized skills such as intubation, wound care, and fluid therapy.
Public Engagement
Primarily Possums engages with the public through interviews and educational content, such as podcasts and video interviews, to raise awareness about wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. The organization also maintains a presence on social media platforms to share updates and enlist support for its mission.

It was another insane day. The first consult case of the day was an alligator, we also had two rescue missions, and an overwhelming number of fawn calls. Not all of the animals make it. Some of the stories are too sad to share. It's heartbreaking for our team taking the calls, the rehabbers, and for the people reaching out trying to get them help. When one of these animals doesn't make it, we grieve with you. We also have some really great saves including a fawn who fell down a storm drain but was rescued and reunited with mom last night. We keep going for the ones that can be saved. Thank you all for caring about our wildlife. 💞 #WeAreGWN (fb)

Georgia Wildlife Network responded to 71 cases today. Respectfully, can everyone please stay indoors tomorrow? 😆 Pics are those shared by finders and just a sampling of the cases. The rest were fawns, (or at least it felt like it). A HUGE thank you to the rehabbers who help heal these babies, the finders who care enough to find help, the transporters who get them into care, and the volunteers who keep us running. Good night! Found An Orphaned or Injured Animal. Primarily Possums Meet Suzie DeGrasse Im licensed for small mammals songbirds and rabies vector species bats but found my strength in caring for opossums bats cottontail rabbits and armadillos. Learning new skills and new species is a joyous part of the job for me. Wildlife rehabilitation is funded solely out of the rehabbers pocket and donations I am not reimbursed by any agency.
