Last month, The 49% brought together an extraordinary group of women leaders, journalists, peacebuilders, and activists from around the world for a powerful convening in Berlin🇩🇪 This gathering was born out of a simple but urgent truth: women remain underrepresented in leadership, especially in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. We believe that must change — because without women at the table, lasting peace is impossible. Over three days, we listened deeply, shared stories, and realized just how much our struggles — and hopes — overlap. We imagined new possibilities and strategized together on how storytelling, technology, and transnational solidarity can advance women’s rights and promote peace. At the heart of it all? Action. Together, we built a road map for real, concrete steps to create change — not someday, but now. What began in Berlin is only the start of something bigger: a growing network of women committed to peace, justice, and lasting change. This International Women’s Day, we asked women across the globe to tie a red string around their wrist, to stand in solidarity with women everywhere, to signal to the world that women - the largest minority - are united in the same fight for freedom. For some the string was a bracelet worn in a country where they are safe, for others it was an act of defiance - a physical reminder that they are not alone. This year the red string made appearances in places like Nigeria, Germany, Afghanistan, Israel and the US. Next year we’ll be calling on YOU to grow this list!
