“To be the first person in my family to graduate means a lot to me because that means I broke a generational curse.” – Josh, Dare to Dream® youth The odds are stacked against youth experiencing foster care, but it doesn't have to be this way. Less than 50% of youth in foster care graduate high school by age 18. Less than 3% will earn a college degree. These statistics shouldn’t define them and through the Dare to Dream® we’re changing this narrative through consistent mentorship and support. Josh was failing in school, struggling to balance helping his mom care for his siblings and trying to keep up with his classes. “I needed help with math because I wasn't very good at it,” Josh shared. “That was when I met Emmanuel.” “He didn’t have the most stable environment before,” Emmanuel, his Dare to Dream® mentor, recalls. “But if you look at him now, he’s come such a long way.” With Emmanuel’s guidance, Josh not only improved in school—he graduated. He broke the cycle. This is the power of relationships: showing up, building trust, and creating stability where it’s needed most. Education should never be out of reach for youth experiencing foster care.
