About the University of New Orleans In 1958 Louisiana State University in New Orleans was conceived as a liberal arts college for commuting students and by 1961 the University of New Orleans became a full fouryear institution. Today the University of New Orleans a member of the University of Louisiana System is known to be the premier urban research university of the State of Louisiana.
