Poets! Join us on Saturday, June 7, at 10 am at Baldwin & Co. for a FREE writing workshop led by BRAD RICHARD. Here's what he has in store for us at this session, titled “Follow the Brush: Writing Zuihitsu." Many of us are familiar with Japanese poetic forms such as haiku, but most of us are less familiar with the Japanese literary mode or genre called zuihitsu. For Japanese readers and writers, it is a mode of essay-writing, one that is highly associative (although focused on a single theme or topic), subjective, and without a fixed formal structure. In recent years, American writers have explored its possibilities as a poetic mode that is a hybrid of prose and poetry, poem and essay. If these descriptions sound slippery--well, it's not an easy mode to describe! We'll spend some time looking at older and contemporary examples, along with some thoughts by Kimiko Hahn, the writer most responsible for introducing zuihitsu to American audiences. Along the way, we will also generate our own zuihitsu drafts. Please come with a notebook or other writing material and a mind ready to make quick associations and shift in and out of different kinds of thinking. Whether you end up turning what you generate into examples of zuihitsu, I hope you will end up with material that you can use for a variety of purposes and, perhaps most of all, with some fresh ways of thinking about writing and genre. This is a FREE writing workshop, but please register beforehand here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdqYV4VeZHNULrdNhkQz5iIQQF1I0veOdfF8nn19WJeYP7xDA/viewform (fb)

For this week's look back at TWFest 2025, we're throwing back to two music-filled Last Bohemia events: The Last Bohemia Soiree: Tim Murray is Witches! and Drummer & Smoke! Did you get to see these events live? Tell us in the comments! Thank you to our incredible performers, and thank you to the Toulouse Theatre, our amazing venue sponsor!
