On #InternationalDayforBiologicalDiversity, we honor the rich tapestry of life within the Tayna-Usala corridor in Democratic Republic of the Congo. This region stands as one of Africa's most biodiverse areas, home to a multitude of species including forest elephants, chimpanzees, leopards, golden cats, and critically endangered Grauer's gorillas. Grauer's gorillas play a pivotal role in the health of the forests. Their activities, such as seed dispersal through fruit consumption, are essential for forest regeneration, which in turn supports countless other species. As GRACE DRC Director Jackson Mbeke says, "protecting gorillas, means protecting Congolese forests, and all the biodiversity found in them." Her story began with heartbreak—confiscated from poachers as a baby, Lulingu lost her family to the illegal wildlife trade. But today, she thrives in safety, surrounded by a new gorilla family and the lush forest she calls home. Her journey reminds us why we fight to protect critically endangered Grauer’s gorillas and all threatened species.
