Flexible packaging keeps our food fresh, but to recycle it into food-grade material, we must ensure it’s completely clean. However, plastic films are hard to decontaminate, so recycling rates are low. One promising solution to this challenge is Nextek's COtooCLEAN technology. The process uses super-critical CO2 as a solvent to remove contaminants from plastic films, enabling them to be recycled into high-quality, food-grade resins. This approach uses less energy compared to producing virgin plastic, with a 60% lower carbon footprint. It also costs less than current cleaning methods. Building on years of research and refinement, Nextek, with our support, is partnering with Coveris to establish a demonstration facility. It will be instrumental in thoroughly evaluating the practical and commercial viability of the COtooCLEAN technology at scale. This collaborative effort showcases how innovation can drive truly circular packaging and we are excited to follow its progress. This #EarthDay2025, we’re proud to highlight ASASE Foundation — a social enterprise that is building cleaner communities and transforming plastic waste into jobs and real economic opportunity. Informal waste picking in Ghana is a difficult job, especially for women. ASASE is addressing this problem through its CASH IT! recycling plants. They enable waste pickers in their network to work under safer conditions and access better pay and employment benefits. Beyond its vital social impact, ASASE is also advancing a circular economy for plastics in Ghana. Now operating three recycling plants, they turn plastic waste into valuable materials and generate verified plastic credits, incentivising collection and processing.
