Since retiring, I’ve been a volunteer Medicare Counselor for the Pima Council on Aging (PCOA), which is the designated State Health Insurance Program in Pima County (SHIP). We are part of an army of volunteers across the U.S. who help people understand and navigate the complicated Medicare program. We help reduce the call load at 1-800-MEDICARE, where paid employees provide the same type of service, except without our local knowledge and personalized service. We require some small funding to operate as volunteers, but the current budget proposal eliminates the SHIP program entirely.
