The Fire Museum of Memphis opened in 1998 in Firehouse #1 in downtown Memphis. The museum strives to be the best fire museum in the country and reduce the loss of lives and property through fire safety education. Historical displays and interactive exhibits teach the public about the history of the Memphis Fire Department and fire safety education.
Fire Museum of Memphis
The Fire Museum of Memphis is a nonprofit educational institution dedicated to fire safety education and preserving fire service history. Founded in 1998, it operates from the historic Fire Engine House No. 1 building, originally constructed in 1910, and is recognized for its role in reducing fire-related fatalities and injuries through public outreach programs.
Mission and Programs
The museum's mission focuses on fire prevention education, emphasizing interactive exhibits and curriculum-based programs validated in partnership with the University of Memphis. Its initiatives target reducing life loss and property damage, particularly among school-aged children, with free admission and transportation reimbursement for schools.
Exhibits
- Historical Displays: Artifacts include vintage fire engines, equipment, and memorabilia documenting the Memphis Fire Department’s history, including a dedicated exhibit chronicling African-American firefighters’ contributions since 1955[^4^].
- Interactive Simulations: A house fire simulation demonstrates fire behavior and evacuation procedures, while a timed "escape maze" reinforces safety protocols.
- Educational Installations: Themed rooms provide fire safety tips for different home environments, supplemented by motion-activated displays and virtual reality games.
Impact
Since opening, the museum has contributed to lowering Memphis’s fire fatality rate, which was 2.5 times the national average in 1998. Renovations in 2014 modernized exhibits, expanding their reach to national and international fire departments seeking to replicate its public education model.
Operations
The museum collaborates with fire service professionals to ensure accuracy in its exhibits and programs. It also hosts archival materials, including photographs and oral histories, to preserve the cultural heritage of firefighting in Memphis.
