Erin Bakkom, an 8th grade social studies teacher in Portsmouth, believes students are ready for the truth. By middle school, she says, kids can handle the complexity of our past—and more than that, they want it. The challenge isn’t their capacity. It’s the pressure to present history in a way that avoids discomfort. Bills that restrict honest conversations about systemic racism, she warns, don’t protect students—they silence them. And when fear shapes how we teach history, we lose the opportunity to learn from it.
