“From what Authority they [enslavers] assume the Power to dispose of our Lives, Freedom and Property…" These were the words of Prince Whipple, joined by eighteen other enslaved men as they petitioned the NH government for freedom in 1779. While their petition was not successful, it was a brilliantly-written document that used the language of the Revolutionary era to express their understanding of freedom and the inequity between their “God-Given Rights” and those of their enslavers. #BlackHistoryNH #RevolutionaryWar #freedom.
