Museum of the Albemarle Inc.
The Museum of the Albemarle is a significant cultural institution located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. It serves as the northeastern regional branch of the North Carolina Museum of History, under the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. The museum is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the rich history and culture of the Albemarle region of northeastern North Carolina.
History
Established in 1967, the Museum of the Albemarle initially operated from a former North Carolina Highway Patrol station. Over the years, it expanded to its current four-story building on the downtown waterfront, which was completed in 2008. This strategic location allows the museum to capitalize on the scenic views of the Pasquotank River, enhancing the visitor experience.
Exhibitions and Programs
The museum's core exhibit, "Our Story - Life in the Albemarle," spans over 10,000 years of regional history, featuring more than 700 artifacts in a 6,200-square-foot gallery. The gallery provides a chronological overview of the area's history, from prehistoric times through the colonial era and into the present day. Rotating galleries highlight specific themes, such as "Temperance & Bootlegging," "Women Breaking Barriers," and underwater archaeology, ensuring a dynamic experience for visitors.
Community Involvement
The Museum of the Albemarle actively engages with the community through various programs. Notably, it offers a Junior Docent program for youth between the ages of 13 and 18, providing them with opportunities to learn about and share the region's history.
Architectural Features
The museum itself is architecturally striking, with a distinctive Kelly green roof and large windows offering views of the waterfront. Its design complements the scenic downtown area of Elizabeth City, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
Mission
The museum's mission is to inspire a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Albemarle region's complex past, from its early indigenous peoples and colonial settlers to its contributions to modern American history. By sharing the stories of the people who have shaped this area, the Museum of the Albemarle aims to foster community pride and awareness of the region's significant role in North Carolina's history.

Join us 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝟏𝟐 𝐩𝐦, as we host History for Lunch. Author Bill Barber will highlight some of the men from northeastern North Carolina who served along our coast during the American Revolution and kept the British at bay. In 1776, the North Carolina Provincial Congress authorized the establishment of Independent Sea Coast Companies to patrol against British vessels along the coast. Eventually, the work of the Sea Coast Companies transitioned to coastal militia who protected the shoreline for the duration of the war. The Museum will offer the History for Lunch program in-person and through Zoom.
