Overview
Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity Inc. is a U.S. nonprofit organization, identified by the Employer Identification Number (EIN) 91-1937409. It is one of the largest social fraternities in the United States, known for its mission to build balanced leaders.
History
Sigma Phi Epsilon was founded on November 1, 1901, at Richmond College, now the University of Richmond, in Richmond, Virginia. The fraternity was established by 12 determined young men who sought to create a campus fellowship based on Judeo-Christian ideals, focusing on the principles of Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love. Initially, the group attempted to establish a chapter of Chi Phi but was refused due to the small size of Richmond College. This rejection led to the formation of their own fraternity, initially called Sigma Phi, which was later renamed to Sigma Phi Epsilon to avoid confusion with an existing national fraternity.
Mission and Programs
Sigma Phi Epsilon is renowned for its mission to "Build Balanced Leaders for the World’s Communities". The fraternity emphasizes the development of well-rounded individuals through its Balanced Man Program, which focuses on cultivating leaders, scholars, athletes, and gentlemen. This program was a revolutionary approach in the fraternity world, as it eliminated traditional pledging processes and emphasized holistic personal development.
Achievements and Impact
- Membership: Sigma Phi Epsilon has grown significantly since its inception, with over 310,000 lifetime members and approximately 15,000 undergraduates across the U.S.
- Chapters: The fraternity operates more than 260 chapters, making it one of the largest in terms of undergraduate enrollment and chapter presence.
- Innovation: Sigma Phi Epsilon was the first national fraternity to eliminate pledging and create a national housing trust for its chapters.
- Community Engagement: The Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation supports scholarships, leadership development, and personal growth programs for its members.
Notable Practices
In recent years, Sigma Phi Epsilon has made significant strides in inclusivity and social responsibility. It became the first fraternity in the North American Interfraternity Conference to formalize acceptance of transgender men as members in December 2014. Additionally, in November 2019, Sigma Phi Epsilon withdrew from the North American Interfraternity Council over concerns regarding hazing and substance abuse policies.
