First-St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church
Overview

First-St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, located in Chicago, Illinois, is one of the oldest Lutheran congregations in the United States. Founded by German immigrants, it embodies the principles of Martin Luther and serves as a cornerstone of the community.

History

The church was established in 1843 by nine men and several women who met at a grocery store on the corner of Franklin and Lake Streets. This gathering was pivotal in organizing the first Lutheran congregation in Chicago. Mayor William B. Ogden provided the congregation with a plot of land at the corner of LaSalle and Ohio Streets for their first church, which was completed in February 1844. The initial building was modest, measuring only 30 feet by 60 feet[1][3].

As the congregation grew, they built a new chapel on Grand Avenue, dedicated in July 1849. This marked the beginning of a series of expansions and relocations due to the rapid growth of the congregation[1][3].

Significance

First-St. Paul played a significant role in the formation of the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States in 1847. The church's early leadership, including Pastor Augustus T. Selle, was instrumental in shaping its Lutheran identity[1].

The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed the third St. Paul church, but vital records were rescued by Pastor Heinrich Wunder. The church was rebuilt with support from The Missouri Synod[1].

Modern Period

By the late 1960s, the congregation decided to build a new church. Designed by architect Edward Dart, the current building was dedicated in October 1970. It features a unique curvilinear design intended to foster a sense of closeness among the congregation[1][3].

Today, First-St. Paul continues to uphold its founding principles, emphasizing the love of the Triune God and maintaining its focus on Martin Luther's teachings. The church engages in various community activities, including educational programs, community meals, and concerts[1].

Beliefs and Practices

The church adheres to the core Lutheran beliefs of grace alone, scripture alone, and faith alone. It is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), which is the largest Lutheran denomination in the U.S.[2][3].

The ELCA is known for its ecumenical activities and its advocacy for social justice and community outreach, aligning with First-St. Paul's mission to serve its community actively[2][4].
