We are truly excited to announce the winner of the 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗖. 𝗞𝗼𝗹𝗯 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 for the 2024 call is 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶́𝗻𝗲𝘇-𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗼 and colleagues for their article entitled “South of the Empire: Inka-Style Pottery Production in Relation to Local Pottery Traditions in the Upper-Middle Basin of the Aconcagua Valley (Central Chile)” published in 𝐸𝑡ℎ𝑛𝑜𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑒𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑦 - https://doi.org/10.1080/19442890.2024.2443346 The 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 selected Andrea’s paper for its “innovative research, using a suite of analytical techniques—including macrotrace analysis, petrography, and geochemical and mineralogical methods, which reveals both continuities in local production and key technological innovations under Inka influence. These 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿, 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 in the Andean world, and the adjudication panel praised the study for its methodological rigor, and thoughtful integration of societal and cultural context.” According to Andrea, the paper proposes that the pottery-making process, beyond the final product, was integral to Inka political strategies in the Aconcagua Valley, particularly in political commensalism. It highlights the 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 in these strategies, offering 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻'𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗼-𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 and raising new questions about technological knowledge transfer, potentially involving foreign pottery specialists. A key strength of this study is its multi-scale integrated analysis, which delves into how innovations and continuities reveal the social interactions underpinning the production of Inka-style ceramics on the empire's southern frontier. Andrea is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London, and this research is part of her ongoing doctoral studies funded by Becas Chile from the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID). Some analyses included in this study were conducted in the Competence Center Archaeometry Baden-Wuerttemberg laboratory premises, which is part of the Archaeometry Research Group at the University of Tübingen. CIEM Aconcagua provided most of the material analyzed under the governmental procedure established for these purposes. Big congratulations, Andrea! Find out more about the Charles C. Kolb award and how to apply here: https://socarchsci.org/awards/charles-c-kolb-award.html Access the article here: https://doi.org/10.1080/19442890.2024.2443346 (fb)
