This Mother’s Day, we think of the countless mothers who endured the unimaginable loss of their sons aboard USS Indianapolis, during the Second World War. Many of these young men were not yet married—some still in their teens. For the mothers who received that devastating news, the grief was a burden, so heavy to bear. One such mother, Mrs. Lenora Evans, wrote this heartfelt letter to Captain McVay after the tragedy. In it, she shared her sorrow and a moving poem by Laura Thompson Pickering. This was done in memory of Lenora's 20-year-old son, Arthur, a pharmacist’s mate aboard the Indianapolis, who was killed in the sinking on July 30, 1945. Stories like those of Arthur Evans’—along with other letters, photographs, and memories—will be featured on the new Project 888 website, launching this Memorial Day. We invite you to spend a moment exploring these powerful tributes to courage, sacrifice, and the enduring love of mothers. (fb)
