Le Jardin Academy
Le Jardin Academy is a nonprofit organization headquartered on the Windward side of Oʻahu in the City and County of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. Established in 1961, the academy provides private education for students from Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 and is classified under section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, making contributions to the organization tax-deductible.
History
The academy was founded by Madame Henriette D. Neal, who initially opened a preschool known as Le Jardin d'Enfants at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kailua. With a focus on teaching the French language, the program gradually expanded over the years to include additional grades. By 1975, enrollment surpassed 100 students.
In 1992, Le Jardin Academy merged with Windward Preparatory School, leading to an expansion in its student body. The school moved to its current campus, donated by the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation, in 1999. This site, formerly the Kailua Drive-In theater, encompasses 24 acres. In the early 2000s, the academy added high school grades, celebrating its first graduating class in 2006. Recent developments include the addition of a new arts and innovations center expected to be completed in late 2024.
Academics and Programs
Le Jardin Academy offers a comprehensive curriculum, including the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, which emphasizes critical thinking and global citizenship. The academy provides instruction in several languages, including French, Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish.
The school is known for its commitment to fostering a strong sense of community, which it describes as the LJA ‘Ohana—a network that includes families, students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Community engagement and environmental stewardship are integral to its educational philosophy.
Financial Overview
As of its latest financial reporting in June 2023, Le Jardin Academy reported total revenues primarily from program services, which accounted for approximately 80.9% of total revenue. Total contributions received were about $4.73 million, highlighting the academy's strong philanthropic support.
The organization reported total assets of approximately $33 million and total liabilities of about $16 million, indicating a healthy financial status that supports its operational and educational initiatives.
Governance
Le Jardin Academy's board of directors comprises a diverse group of leaders from various sectors, ensuring a strong governance framework. The board engages in regular assessments and evaluates its performance, focusing on inclusivity and transparency.
Conclusion
Le Jardin Academy continues to play a significant role in the educational landscape of Hawaiʻi, emphasizing character development, academic excellence, and community involvement as cornerstones of its educational mission. With its history, commitment to innovation, and strong community ties, the academy is poised for continued growth and impact in the years to come.
