National Wild Turkey Federation
The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of North America's hunting heritage. Founded in 1973, it has grown to include more than 250,000 members across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and 14 other countries.
Mission and Activities
The NWTF's mission focuses on two main objectives: to conserve wild turkey populations and to preserve the cultural heritage of hunting. Through its members, volunteers, and partnerships with wildlife agencies and corporations, the organization has played a pivotal role in wildlife conservation efforts. By the time of its founding, there were approximately 1.3 million wild turkeys in North America. Thanks to decades of conservation work, this number has increased dramatically to nearly 7 million.
The NWTF is involved in several key initiatives:
- Conservation Efforts: The organization has helped to enhance or protect over 22 million acres of wildlife habitat. This includes work on public, private, and corporate lands, underscoring the importance of habitat preservation for wild turkey populations.
- Hunting Heritage Preservation: By promoting hunting as a sustainable and honorable practice, the NWTF supports efforts to recruit new hunters and preserve the cultural and sporting aspects of hunting.
- Community Programs: NWTF sponsors programs like JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics, and Sportsmanship), Women in the Outdoors, and Wheelin' Sportsmen, aimed at introducing people of all ages and abilities to outdoor skills and the importance of wildlife management.
