In Phoenix, ICE agents have begun detaining undocumented immigrants immediately after their immigration court cases are dismissed. People attend their legal appointments, complying with immigration law, and even after some have had their cases dismissed, they are ambushed by ICE agents in plain clothes and sent to immigration detention. This violates people’s rights to due process and is punishing people for participating in the legal system. As Aliento said in their post about this, “no one should choose between showing up to court and being detained, or staying home and being labeled non-compliant.” If people don’t attend their court hearings, they could be ordered removed in absentia. If you have an immigration appointment or court date, we strongly urge you not to go alone. Bring a lawyer if you can, or a trusted U.S. citizen or permanent resident. However, many people are at risk and do not have anyone to accompany them.
