Youth Employment Institute
Our mission is "to promote self-sufficiency and life-long learning by nurturing personal, educational and career development of young people." The Youth Employment Institute began in February of 1985 as a direct service program of The Private Industry Council. YEI provides economic opportunities to youth residing in Portland and by offering an integrated approach to employment, education and training services, and by filling the gaps that present barriers to youth seeking living wage jobs. YEI youth are typically at risk of dropping out of, or have dropped out of, high school. Many have learning disabilities or basic skills deficiencies, others have involvement with gangs and the juvenile justice system. Over sixty percent are youth of color.
