Established in 2017, PALS is registered as a 501(c)(3) entity, ensuring its operational transparency and adherence to regulatory requirements.

Founding and Inspiration

PALS was founded by Sergio and Violetta Neri, along with Svein Hansen, in response to personal experiences with autism. Sergio Neri's son, Davide, who lives with autism, inspired the establishment of the organization. The Neri family's engagement with autism intervention programs dates back several decades, influencing their commitment to supporting individuals with developmental challenges.

Mission

The primary mission of PALS is to assist individuals with developmental disabilities in achieving more independent, productive, and fulfilling lives. The organization accomplishes this through various programs and interventions designed to enhance functional skills and create employment opportunities. PALS encourages participants to produce useful and marketable products, fostering self-reliance and integration into the community.

Programs and Services

PALS offers a range of activities and learning opportunities for adults aged 21 and older, catering to those with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, seizure disorders, and other conditions. Its programs are tailored to meet the diverse needs of participants, providing avenues for skill development and social interaction. The organization operates in collaboration with local institutions to ensure comprehensive support.

Staff and Training

PALS employs a team of certified instructors trained by Rutgers University College of Direct Support. Staff members are also certified in CPR and first aid, reflecting the organization's commitment to quality care and safety. The staff-to-participant ratio supports personalized attention and hands-on learning experiences.

Partnerships and Funding

As a state-approved provider of services by the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), PALS receives financial support through a fee-for-service structure. Additional funding comes from foundations, organizations, families, and individuals who contribute to its mission.

Future Developments

Looking ahead, PALS aims to expand its infrastructure by establishing group homes for male and female residents. The organization envisions supervised apartments for those capable of independent living, further extending its support to participants.

Impact

PALS has made a significant impact on the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities by offering meaningful activities and job opportunities. Its success is reflected in the positive testimonials from families who appreciate the organization's commitment to care and community integration. As interest in PALS continues to grow, so does the demand for its services, highlighting the organization's role in addressing the needs of individuals with developmental challenges.
