Schipperke Club of America Inc.
The Schipperke Club of America Inc. is a nonprofit organization established on April 10, 1929, in New York City. It serves as the Parent Club for the Schipperke breed in the United States, recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). The club's primary mission is to promote, protect, and preserve the Schipperke breed.
Founding and Early Years
At its inception, the club elected its first officers, including Mrs. Henrietta Proctor Donell as president and Miss Frances Isabel Ormiston as secretary. The founding members adopted a breed standard that was a translation of the Belgian standard, which emphasized the qualities of the traditional Belgian Schipperke. This standard became the basis for the American Kennel Club's official breed standard for the Schipperke, which initially only recognized black Schipperkes for conformation shows.
Activities and Publications
One of the club's early projects was the publication of informational booklets about the Schipperke. These educational materials were crucial in disseminating information about the breed to the public. By 1940, the club had published an expanded book detailing the history of the breed globally, which was later revised in 1950. These publications filled a gap after the English breed book by E. B. Holmes went out of print.
National Specialties and Membership
The Schipperke Club of America hosts national specialty shows, which serve as major events for breed enthusiasts. The first National Specialty was held in New Jersey in 1930. Over the years, the club has grown, with over 300 members and several regional clubs. The club plays a pivotal role in promoting the breed, enhancing its popularity through shows and educational activities.
Breed Advocacy
The Schipperke Club of America maintains its status as the Parent Club for the Schipperke, ensuring that the breed is represented and promoted across the United States. The club's efforts have been instrumental in developing consistent judging standards for the breed, particularly in clarifying size and coat characteristics that distinguish the Belgian Schipperke.
Nonprofit Status
As a nonprofit organization, the Schipperke Club of America Inc. operates under the EIN 721076739. Its activities are focused on enhancing the welfare and recognition of the Schipperke breed within the United States.
Impact and Legacy
The club's dedication to the Schipperke has led to increased awareness and appreciation of the breed. Through its publications, shows, and membership activities, the Schipperke Club of America continues to play a vital role in the promotion and preservation of this unique and historic breed.
