First Lutheran Church
First Lutheran Church is a nonprofit religious organization affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). It is part of a major Lutheran denomination formed in 1988 through the merger of three Lutheran church bodies: The American Lutheran Church, the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and the Lutheran Church in America[1][2]. The ELCA traces its roots back to the mid-17th century, reflecting a long historical tradition of Lutheranism in the United States[1][4].
History
First Lutheran Church was established in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, through the merger of two congregations, St. Olaf and Grace Evangelical Lutheran, on September 21, 1920[5]. Initially, the two congregations struggled with the language of worship, as St. Olaf preferred to maintain Norwegian services while Trinity (later Grace) wanted services in English. After Trinity reorganized as an English-speaking church in 1918 and became Grace Evangelical Lutheran, the merger with St. Olaf was finalized to form First Lutheran Church, which adopted English as the language for all services[5].
The church used the St. Olaf building as its place of worship, and Rev. H. J. Glenn, formerly pastor of Grace Church, became the first pastor of the newly formed First Lutheran Church[5].
Affiliation and Beliefs
As a member of the ELCA, First Lutheran Church shares the denomination’s commitment to a living and daring confidence in God’s grace. The ELCA emphasizes being freed in Christ to serve and love neighbors, engaging in acts of restoration and reconciliation in Jesus Christ’s name throughout the world[1]. The ELCA is known for its involvement in ecumenical efforts and is a member of organizations such as the Lutheran World Federation and the World Council of Churches[2][4].
Significance
First Lutheran Church is representative of the broader heritage of Lutheran faith in America, which is marked by a history of immigration, language transitions, and denominational mergers. It reflects the ELCA’s efforts to provide inclusive worship and community service rooted in Lutheran theology and social outreach.
