Overview Bexar County Cellular On Patrol Inc. is a nonprofit organization founded in Bexar County, Texas, with a mission to enhance community safety through cooperation with law enforcement and citizen involvement.

History The original concept of Cellular on Patrol was initiated in 1992 by Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems as an informal service for cellular phone subscribers. This program aimed to encourage subscribers to report accidents or crimes using their cell phones. In 1997, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, along with local entities, formalized the program by adding training and infrastructure support.

Program Activities The organization supports a structured program where members receive training from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. This training equips volunteers with the skills needed to recognize and report suspicious activities effectively. Participants become the "eyes and ears" of their neighborhoods, fostering a closer relationship between residents and law enforcement.

Training and Operations Training includes a four-hour classroom session and an optional eight-hour ride-along with a deputy. During these sessions, volunteers learn to identify various crimes, such as burglaries and thefts. Upon completion, they are provided with identification cards and the opportunity to purchase logo items. These patrollers use their cell phones for quick emergency and non-emergency reporting, contributing to making their neighborhoods safer.

Impact and Participation As of the late 1990s, the program had grown significantly, with over 2,000 graduates representing more than 200 neighborhoods in San Antonio. Bexar County Cellular On Patrol Inc. plays a vital role in community safety by promoting neighborhood vigilance and collaboration with law enforcement.
