Spalding Education International
Spalding Education International (SEI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting literacy and educational development using the Spalding Method, a structured approach to language arts education. Founded by Romalda B. Spalding in 1986, the organization aims to promote and advance her method to enhance reading and writing skills among children and adults.
History
Romalda B. Spalding, born on February 1, 1899, in Santa Rosa, Honduras, developed her approach after realizing that traditional methods weren't effective for all students. She collaborated with neurologist Dr. Samuel T. Orton to create a more comprehensive teaching method. Spalding passed away on January 29, 1994, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Spalding Method
The Spalding Method combines educational philosophy with time-tested learning principles. It emphasizes phonemic awareness, systematic phonics instruction, decoding, morphology, fluency, and comprehension. By breaking words into phonograms, this structured literacy approach enables students to decode complex texts effectively, fostering confident communicators and critical thinkers.
Activities and Programs
SEI offers certification programs for teachers and instructors to ensure the effective implementation of the Spalding Method. The organization provides on-site staff development for schools and districts. Additionally, it maintains a rigorous training process for Spalding Certified Teachers, Instructors, and Executive Trainers.
Recognition and Impact
Spalding Education International received the Silver Effectiveness badge from the International Certification of Evidence of Impact in Education (ICEIE) following a 2024 study that demonstrated its effectiveness in meeting criteria for ESSA Level 3 and Level 2. This recognition underscores SEI's commitment to evidence-based educational practices.
Financial Overview
As a 501(c)(3) organization, Spalding Education International derives its revenue from program services, investment income, and sales of educational materials. Contributions also play a significant role in supporting its activities.
Mission
SEI's mission is to enhance literacy for all children and adults by applying the Spalding Method, developing skilled readers, critical listeners, and accomplished writers and spellers. This mission aligns with its goal of fostering a lifelong love of learning among its students.
