Could the environmental cost of home demolition be stopped by giving functional homes a second life somewhere else? The shíshálh Nation and Renewal Development are answering that question through their collaboration in relocating 10 existing homes in Port Moody, BC to shíshálh territory—cutting costs, reducing waste, and building community. Faced with BC’s recent upzoning laws, which have triggered mass demolitions, “rescued” homes—instead of being bulldozed—will make a journey up the coast to be used once again as a residential living space. In the latest addition to the The Tyee’s #WhatWorks series, sponsored by Magic Canoe, filmmaker Quinn Kelly captures how this powerful collaboration is giving homes a second life and challenging our society’s prevalent demolition-first mindset. Over the past century, globalization has reshaped production, culture, agriculture, consumption, and more—bringing wealth and opportunities to many. But how do historical and Indigenous connections shape our understanding of bioregional life? In this Reality Roundtable for The Great Simplification, Nate Hagens sits down with leaders of the bioregioning movement Daniel Christian Wahl, Samantha Power and Isabel Carlisle to explore the urgent need to reconnect with our local places to address ecological, social and economic challenges. They dive into the importance of decentralized governance, resilient communities and regenerative practices, offering deep insights into how we can engage with our bioregions for a sustainable future. Listen to the full thought-provoking conversation on the Magic Canoe website at the link in bio. (fb)
