The Seaport Coalition, a group of community activists, has a plan for the future of the South Street Seaport Historic District that preserves its integrity and accepts place-making as its “highest and best use”. Public assets and open space should be used to maximize public benefits therein. The District’s waterfront is not just for show, but for maritime use- public, private, commercial, historic, large, small, stationary, visiting vessels. This is what makes a seaport. The Historic District’s low-scale architecture should be respected and celebrated without changes in the current zoning. Any excavation work (archeological or remediation) must be done using best practices in a safe and speedy fashion.
