This Indigenous History Month, we’re celebrating the inspiring work of our Indigenous partners who are revitalizing culture and sparking pride and healing in their communities. First up is Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq / Kitikmeot Heritage Society which means “learning through culture” in Inuinnaqtun, the language of the Inuinnait—a distinct group of Inuit in the central Canadian Arctic. Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq is restoring intergenerational language and cultural transmission through programs and resources grounded in Inuinnait ways of being. This includes land-based learning, an online language and culture portal, and community spaces like the new Kuugalaaq Cultural Campus, an immersive Inuinnaqtun environment for cultural revitalization.
