In honor of National Nurses Week, May 6-12, newspapers across the state, including Honolulu Star-Advertiser, The Garden Island Newspaper, West Hawaii Today and Hawaii Tribune-Herald, are shining a spotlight on the remarkable nurses who care for our communities every day. Four of our own Hawaii Pacific Health nurses are featured in this special Nurses Week 2025 section, representing the compassion and dedication found across our system at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, Pali Momi Medical Center and Straub Benioff Medical Center and Straub Benioff Clinics on Oahu and Lanai, and Wilcox Medical Center and Kauai Medical Clinic on Kauai. Charmaine Benigno’s strength, her Straub Benioff Medical Center care team’s skill and compassion, and a hallway filled with aloha marked the end of a lifechanging chapter and the beginning of a new journey toward healing and hope for the future. A survivor of the New Year’s Aliamanu fireworks tragedy, Charmaine experienced burns to more than 80% of her body. The Straub Benioff Medical Center Burn Care Unit team, along with staff from the operating room, Intensive Care Unit, physical therapy team and more, treated her for more than four months. As Charmaine left the medical center with gratitude for her second chance at life, those who cared for her will carry her courage in their hearts as an inspiring reminder to keep doing what they do.
