Thanks to everyone who came out to last night’s Beams & Brews at the Touro-Shakspeare Home in Algiers. 🛠️ We’re excited to see this project take shape and are grateful to our sponsors, dedicated volunteers and enthusiastic attendees who made this — and all — Beams & Brews events a success. The Touro-Shakspeare Home opened as an almshouse in 1933, the third iteration of the almshouse by Judah Touro, a local philanthropist. The building later became an elder care facility and remained open for nearly seven decades until in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina made it uninhabitable. Designed by William R. Burk, the building displays both Neo-Classical Revival and Jacobethan Revival styles with Corinthian columns and decorative brickwork. Due to the building’s deterioration, it was included on the Louisiana Landmarks Society’s 2015 New Orleans Nine watch list. With support from the city of New Orleans, the building is currently undergoing restoration efforts to return it to its original use, an almshouse, just as Judah Touro wanted. The project is facilitated by HRI Properties (HRI Properties) as the developer, Landis Construction (Landis Construction) as the general contractor, HCI Architecture as the architects, and Rick Fifield as the historic consultant.
