Cheatham County Historical and Genealogical Association
Our mission has been to collect our county's history for the Cheatham County Museum.
Cheatham County Historical and Genealogical Association
The Cheatham County Historical and Genealogical Association (CCHGA) is a nonprofit organization established in Cheatham County, Tennessee. Founded in 1994, the organization was created as part of the county's efforts to develop community assets and support local history preservation.
Historical Background
The decision to establish CCHGA was made during a meeting on April 17, 1994, attended by Thelma Heflin, Jim Allen, Mary Grey Jenkins, Betty Cannon, and Sherri Hill. A previous historical society in the county had ceased operations in 1983 due to lack of interest, and reviving it was deemed too costly. Instead, the new organization was formed with an added focus on genealogy to differentiate it from its predecessor.
Objectives and Activities
CCHGA aims to foster pride in the county's history and heritage by gathering, preserving, recording, exhibiting, and sharing historical information. The organization operates the Cheatham County Museum, which showcases artifacts and family heirlooms reflecting the county's history.
CCHGA is also involved in genealogical research and preservation, maintaining records and collections that help trace family histories within Cheatham County.
Museum Operations
The Cheatham County Museum is now located in the former Family Dollar building in Ashland City, marking its fourth location over the years. The new space offers nearly 9,000 square feet for exhibits, a significant increase from previous locations. Exhibits include artifacts from the Civil War to the present, with a notable "Wall of Honor" dedicated to county residents who have served in the military.
The museum is open for public visits, offering free admission to veterans, members of CCHGA, those over 80 years old, and children under 10 years old.
Funding and Membership
CCHGA is funded through membership fees, publication sales, special projects, memorial gifts, and donations. The organization hosts annual events and meetings, including history-focused programming.
CCHGA offers various membership tiers to support its operations and provide benefits to members, with categories for individuals, families, students, and lifetime memberships.
Community Engagement
In addition to its museum and genealogy work, CCHGA participates in community events, such as cemetery cleaning and historical lectures. These efforts help engage the public and promote an appreciation for local history.
CCHGA's activities contribute to the preservation and celebration of Cheatham County's unique cultural and historical identity.
