Celebrating 50 Years: HONK! (Spring 2005) 🐥 In Spring of 2005, Maui Academy of Performing Arts brought the delightful musical HONK! to life at the historic ʻIao Theatre. Directed by David C. Johnston, choreographed by Kathleen Schulz and Barry Brinker Jones, with music by Angie Carr, HONK! enchanted audiences with singing ducks, confident frogs, and one gourmet cat. This Olivier Award-winning musical, based on "The Ugly Duckling," featured memorable performances by Francis Tau'a as Ugly, Lisa Paulson as Ida, Steve Hatcher as Drake, and Steven Nikolau as the sly, hungry Cat. Together, they brought warmth, humor, and heart to this whimsical journey. As MAPA celebrates its 50th anniversary, we fondly look back on past productions like HONK! and eagerly anticipate the opening of our new Naylor Theatre—a state-of-the-art black box theatre in historic Wailuku.
