Asian American Liberation Network
The Asian American Liberation Network (AALN) is a nonprofit organization based in the Sacramento area. It was originally founded in 2020 as the Sacramento Asian/Pacific Islander Regional Network. The organization's mission is to build power in the Asian American community to advance social justice and collective liberation.
Mission and Activities
AALN focuses on engaging in anti-racism education, discussing issues related to Asian Americans and the justice system, and addressing the harmful impacts of over-policing on the Asian community. The organization collaborates on initiatives such as building awareness about anti-Asian hate and violence, promoting safe incident reporting, and providing community-informed safety programs.
Community Involvement
AALN is part of broader community efforts to challenge systemic injustices faced by Asian Americans. For instance, they have been involved in a lawsuit against the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) and the City of Sacramento, challenging the sharing of private energy usage data with law enforcement agencies. This lawsuit highlights concerns about privacy violations and disproportionate targeting of Asian communities in surveillance operations.
Structure and Operations
The organization is supported by nearly 40 volunteers committed to advancing social justice and collective action within Asian American communities. Their work involves advocating for community rights and promoting educational initiatives to support Asian American social justice issues.
