Houston Montessori Center
The Houston Montessori Center (HMC) is a nonprofit organization designated as a 501(c)(3), primarily focused on educational activities. It was established as the Foundation for Child Development in 1971 and later became Houston Montessori Center. The organization is dedicated to providing Montessori teacher education and advocating for children through its programs.
History and Development
Houston Montessori Center began its operations by supporting Montessori schools, childcare centers, and teacher education programs. It received approval from the American Montessori Society (AMS) in 1973 and started offering early childhood courses that same year. With authorization from the Texas Education Agency in 1974, HMC expanded its programs to include Infant and Toddler, Early Childhood, and Elementary teacher education. Over the years, it has continued to grow, adding Secondary I and II courses and an Administrator course. By 2004, HMC had introduced a Secondary II course and an Administrator course for school leaders. In 2021, it was recognized as a World Citizen International Peace Site, marking its 50th anniversary.
Programs and Services
HMC offers seven AMS-affiliated credential courses, covering a comprehensive range of educational levels: Infant & Toddler, Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary, and Administrators. These programs are delivered through an integrated onsite and online model, combining face-to-face instruction with remote learning. The organization emphasizes a diverse and inclusive community, valuing education grounded in Montessori philosophy while incorporating current research on learning and development.
Mission and Impact
Houston Montessori Center aims to continue the legacy of Maria Montessori's educational principles, focusing on social justice, peace, and diversity. By providing lifelong learning opportunities for teachers, HMC contributes to fostering independent, competent, responsible, and caring individuals. It is renowned for offering one of the oldest continuous AMS teacher education programs, including the full Montessori continuum of courses.
Financial Overview
As a nonprofit, donations to HMC are tax-deductible. The organization primarily derives its revenue from program services, with minimal contributions from other sources. In recent years, HMC has reported total assets exceeding $500,000 and liabilities under $50,000.
Achievements and Recognition
Houston Montessori Center is recognized for its long-standing role in Montessori education, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2021 by becoming a World Citizen International Peace Site. This recognition underscores HMC's commitment to peace, diversity, and environmental responsibility. The organization honors its past contributors, including notable faculty members named as AMS Living Legacies for their contributions to Montessori worldwide.
