Overview

Vanguard University of Southern California is a private, non-profit Protestant university affiliated with the Assemblies of God. Established in 1920 as the Southern California Bible School, it evolved over the years, becoming Southern California Bible College in 1939, Southern California College in 1959, and finally Vanguard University of Southern California in 1999. Located in Costa Mesa, California, it was the first four-year college in Orange County.

History

Vanguard University was founded by Harold K. Needham, D. W. Kerr, and W. C. Pierce in 1920 with the goal of preparing Christian workers for various ministries. Initially based in Los Angeles, the institution moved to Pasadena in 1927 and was chartered by the state of California in 1939. It relocated to its current campus in Costa Mesa in 1950. Over the years, the university expanded its curriculum to include liberal arts majors, achieved regional accreditation in 1964, and began offering graduate studies in 1983. Its name change to Vanguard University of Southern California marked its transition to university status in 1999.

Structure and Programs

The university is structured into four schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, Patty Arvielo School of Business and Communication, School of Education, and School of Theology and Ministry. Vanguard offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs, including options in psychology, nursing, business, and theology. It also provides online courses and degree completion programs.
