The Saturday photo of the week Early Police Radar Around Laurel After WWII, the use of radar to catch speeders spread rapidly at police departments across the country in the late 1940s. State Trooper Garland Walters, a Laurel resident, was instrumental in administering the program for the Maryland State Police. These photos of Trooper Garland from the 1950s around Laurel were donated by his son, Barry Walters, a career policeman himself with the Prince George’s County PD.

The Saturday photo of the week Safe Driving Program in the 1950s Laurel's American Legion Post 60 sponsored a safe driving program in the 1950s, running dozens of ads in the News Leader for years. Next week will feature State Police photos (courtesy of Barry Walters) enforcing speed limits in the 1950s using radar.
