The **Wisconsin Nurses Honor Guard Inc** (EIN: 83-3374568) is a charitable nonprofit organization composed of volunteer nurses in Wisconsin. Its mission is to honor deceased nurses through ceremonial tributes, recognizing their professional service and contributions to healthcare.
### History and mission
Founded by a statewide network of nursing professionals, the organization performs end-of-life ceremonies for licensed, registered, or advanced practice nurses (active or retired) in Wisconsin. These services, offered at no cost, include symbolic traditions such as the Nightingale Tribute, which acknowledges the nurse’s dedication to patient care and the profession.
### Activities and structure
Volunteers—primarily active or retired nurses—conduct tributes upon request, though participation is contingent on volunteer availability. The group relies on a decentralized model, with members traveling across the state to attend services. Ceremonies often incorporate nursing symbols like the lamp (representing Florence Nightingale’s legacy) and white uniforms.
### Membership and operations
Membership is open to all Wisconsin-licensed nurses, including LPNs, RNs, and APNs. Volunteers undergo training to standardize ceremonial practices, which are demonstrated in instructional videos provided by the organization. As a tax-exempt entity under IRS guidelines, it operates under the NTEE classification for professional societies and philanthropic organizations.
### Recognition and scope
The organization emphasizes statewide accessibility, prioritizing honor over financial compensation. Its tributes aim to preserve nursing heritage while offering closure to colleagues and families. ProPublica and GuideStar list it as an active nonprofit, though detailed financial disclosures are not publicly available due to its exemption from filing certain IRS forms.

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025 the Wisconsin Nurses Honor Guard gathered in Menasha, WI to honor the 45 year nursing career of Marilyn Swanson, RN. Marilyn graduated from the Deaconess School of Nursing in Milwaukee in 1964. During nursing school she did clinical rotations at Cook County Hospital in IL for 6 months. She was an OR nurse for her entire 45 year career. The first 4 years she worked at Deaconess Hospital in Milwaukee and then at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah for 37 years. The last 4 years of her career she worked in Day Surgery at Theda Clark until her retirement in 2009. This was mainly to finally be relieved of night and weekend call. Her daughter recalls that she never complained about going to work--she loved working in the OR! She was a member of AORN for many years. She kept in touch with many of her friends from Theda Clark, where she was called Swanny. Her daughter also recalls that Marilyn was the "neighborhood nurse" when she was growing up. It was not unusual for her to walk into the house and see a neighborhood kid laying on the kitchen table getting a wound bandaged or steri-strips applied. Everyone knew to go see Marilyn Swanson if you got hurt. Marilyn's friend shared a note that she wrote stating that she wanted to be a nurse since she was 4 years old. Nurse Marilyn, we thank you for your 45 years of service to the nursing profession. Rest easy, your brothers and sisters will take it from here. The Wisconsin Nurses Honor Guard would like to thank nurse Marilyn's family for inviting us to provide this final tribute to our colleague. Thank you to the Honor Guard members who were present to honor nurse Marilyn. They were Kathy Vater, Linda Monday, Michelle Schelble, Chris Arenz, and Marie Koch. We appreciate their service. (fb)

Remembered and honored today and always. (fb)
