Overview

Community Outreach Service Center Inc (COSC), with the EIN 742523777, is a nonprofit organization established in 1988. It operates primarily in the Denver metropolitan area, focusing on addressing key social issues such as homelessness, mental health, substance misuse, and recidivism among African American male ex-offenders.

Mission

COSC aims to meet the basic needs of homeless and poor residents while fostering self-sufficiency. The organization emphasizes the importance of peer support networks in helping individuals overcome challenges like mental health issues, substance abuse, and incarceration. These networks are designed to build long-term relationships with clients, providing continuous support beyond immediate needs.

Programs and Services

One of COSC's significant initiatives includes providing permanent supportive housing. For example, through partnerships like Charity's House Apartments, COSC offers peer support services for formerly homeless and incarcerated individuals. This approach helps stabilize housing and encourages workforce re-entry, promoting a pathway to independent living and career development.

History

COSC was founded by Ms. Eddie Woolfolk and her husband, Pastor Robert "Bob" Woolfolk. The organization has its roots in the Five Points/Curtis Park community, where it initially served as a response to community needs following periods of violence and conflict. Over time, its service area has expanded across Northeast Denver and the broader metropolitan area.

Financials

COSC operates as a medium-sized organization with a mix of contributions and program services as its primary revenue streams. In recent years, contributions have accounted for the majority of its revenue. The organization is designated as tax-exempt, allowing donations to be deductible.

Impact

By focusing on community engagement and empowering individuals through peer support, COSC strives to reduce recidivism rates and enhance the overall well-being of its clients. It embodies the philosophy that those it serves are considered "family," fostering a sense of community and belonging.
