Delta Kappa Gamma Society International
Description

Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (DKG) is an international nonprofit organization focused on supporting and promoting the personal and professional growth of women educators. It aims to foster excellence in education and enhance the status of women in the field.

History

Founded on May 11, 1929, at the University of Texas at Austin, DKG was conceived by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, a faculty member and former state superintendent of public instruction, along with eleven other women educators. The society's name is derived from Greek words meaning "teacher," "key," and "women."

Objectives and Activities

DKG's mission is to promote professional and personal growth among women educators and to advocate for excellence in education. The society supports women in education through various initiatives, including scholarships for graduate studies and fellowships for non-members. It also engages in legislative efforts that benefit education and women educators.

The society operates under seven core purposes:

  • Unite: Women educators worldwide in a spiritual fellowship.
  • Honor: Recognize women who have provided distinctive service in education.
  • Advance: Promote the professional interests and positions of women in education.
  • Endow: Provide scholarships and fellowships to support graduate studies.
  • Stimulate: Foster personal and professional growth through active participation.
  • Inform: Keep members updated on current issues affecting the global community.
Structure

DKG is structured in three levels: local chapters, state organizations, and international governance. This structure allows for close integration and coordination across different regions.

Membership

Membership in DKG is by invitation only and is considered a prestigious honor. Active members are currently employed or retired educators, while reserve members are those unable to participate fully due to geographical constraints or disability. Collegiate members are students nearing completion of their education degrees.

Symbols and Traditions

The official symbol of membership is a gold keypin featuring the Greek letters ΔΚΓ. The society's colors are red and green. The red rose is both the official flower and a symbol of the beauty of mind and spirit.

Global Reach

As of recent years, DKG has expanded to include chapters in eighteen countries, reflecting its commitment to impacting education globally.

Notable Aspects

DKG's international headquarters is located in Austin, Texas, and the organization has been recognized for its contributions to women in education. The society continues to play a significant role in empowering women educators worldwide.
