Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions Inc.
Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) is a nonprofit art organization dedicated to fostering innovations in contemporary art and public engagement. Founded in 1978 by a group of committed artists, it is recognized internationally as a pioneer in the arts.
Mission and Core Values
LACE champions and challenges contemporary art by fostering artists who innovate, explore, and take risks. Its mission includes providing diverse publics with opportunities to engage deeply with contemporary art, thereby furthering dialogue and participation between artists and audiences. The organization's core values have remained constant since its inception, focusing on:
- Dedication to the art of our time, emphasizing freedom of expression.
- Experimentation with ideas, materials, and new forms.
- Content that is challenging and socially engaging.
History and Impact
LACE was founded by thirteen artists, including Sarah Parker, Bill Fisher, Robert Gil de Montes, Harry Gamboa, Jr., Gronk, Richard Hyland, Joe Janusz, Marlyn Kemppanien, Ron Reeder, Alexander Sauer, Barry Scharf, David Scharf, and Nancy Youdelman. Over the years, it has nurtured generations of young artists and emerging art forms such as performance art, video art, digital art, and installations. Some influential artists who received early support from LACE include Mike Kelley, John Baldessari, Bill Viola, Adrian Piper, and Gronk.
Programs and Partnerships
LACE offers a variety of programs, including the Emerging Curator Program and the Apprenticeship Program, aimed at supporting emerging artists, curators, and cultural workers. It has partnerships with diverse organizations across Southern California, such as the Hollywood Business Improvement District, Heidi Duckler Dance Company, Southern California Institute of Architecture, and the LGBT Center. Major funders like the Getty and Warhol Foundations have supported its presentations.
Location and Community Role
Initially located in Downtown Los Angeles, LACE relocated to Hollywood in 1993, where it serves as a cultural anchor on Hollywood Boulevard. The organization plays a unique role in the Los Angeles art scene by providing a free, public experimental space for incubating and discussing emerging art. It attracts visitors from around the world and maintains a strong presence in the community by hosting exhibitions, performances, and public projects, along with educational initiatives.
Cultural Significance
As the longest-running incubator for contemporary art in Los Angeles, LACE continues to support emerging artists and foster a dynamic cultural environment. Its commitment to creative freedom and experimentation has made it a pivotal institution in the development of contemporary art practices.
