Tiny flower, big collaboration. 📍La Purisima Mission State Historic Park. Earlier last week, California State Parks biologists Sydney Smith and Brittney Sheets joined Denise Knapp to monitor the endangered Vandenberg monkeyflower (Diplacus vandenbergensis) at La Purisima Mission State Historic Park. Together, they counted flowers at different life stages to track how this rare native plant responds to changing climate conditions. One of the key challenges? Invasive South African veldt grass (Ehrharta calycina), which State Parks is working to manage. Denise is studying how best to protect the monkeyflower’s fragile habitat - one bloom at a time.
