The King Range Alliance gathered in mid-April at the mouth of the Mattole River, the northern border of the King Range National Conservation Area. Made up of BLM King Range, @mattolerestorationcouncil, @mattolesalmon, @friendsofthelostcoast and Sanctuary Forest, and funded by the @conservationlands, the KRA is a collaborative partnership dedicated to advance public conservation and educational activities in the King Range National Conservation Area. Representatives of each of these organizations camped together where the Mattole River meets the ocean after flowing 62 miles through the Lost Coast and the 68,000-acre KRNCA. For three days we toured the Mill Creek Trail, the Mattole River estuary & slough restoration sites, the Punta Gorda trail from Windy Point Road, the Mattole Restoration Council’s native plant nursery, and the site of the planned Mattole Resilience, Education & Research Center, being developed by Mattole Restoration Council in downtown Petrolia. We spoke about future education plans in the watershed, the possible future of our local BLM offices, and how our Alliance can best support the KRNCA and BLM right now. It was a much-needed, heartwarming and inspiring gathering, to draw breath in the presence of the river, ocean and each other at the same time, to hear and see the harbor seals and elephant seals, to watch the birds fly high above the King Range, unaware of the turmoil of humanity in these times. It was so encouring to see tiny native plants, destined for Klamath River restoration, to get a glimpse of Mattole Salmon Group’s modest offices, where these hardworking fish monitors analyze data and conduct research, to walk upon the future site of what will no doubt be an incredibly valuable destination for locals and visitors alike—be sure to check out MRC’s fundraiser to help aid their efforts in securing the location of their future Mattole Resilience, Education and Research Center! We ALL play a small part in the future of this place, and though times are incredibly hard right now, there is hope. So much resilient, unstoppable hope. #kingrange #mattole #humboldt (fb)
