Yesterday, Governor Abbott signed SB 1008 into law—Texas Restaurant Association’s signature bill of the 2025 session—marking a major win for the state’s restaurants, food trucks and other foodservice businesses. This new law is nicknamed Consistent Restaurant Regulations because it improves transparency and predictability for our industry, which is regulated by about 200 different health departments across Texas. For example, SB 1008 caps permit fees, eliminates duplicative requirements, protects background music and delivery rights and requires advance notice of inspection changes. Each of these reforms matter, and together they bring real relief, especially for the small businesses that make up 90% of our foodservice industry. Today’s economy is marked with tremendous uncertainty and cost pressures, but SB 1008 is an example of the bipartisan work the Texas Restaurant Association leads to mitigate these pressures, helping local restaurants save money and focus on what really matters—serving their communities. We’re grateful to Senator Mayes Middleton , Representative Cody Harris, Governor Abbott and leadership in the Senate and House for prioritizing restaurants once again. We look forward to working closely with our members and local partners to ensure smooth implementation before the law takes effect in September. (fb)
