Front Porch, SLO

Front Porch is a nonprofit organization located in San Luis Obispo, California, with a mission to provide a welcoming space for students from diverse backgrounds. It operates as a free coffee house and community hub, fostering an environment where students can build genuine relationships and experience life together through inclusivity.

History and Development

Front Porch has its roots on land owned by the Presbytery of Santa Barbara, which was acquired in 1952. The organization evolved over time, transitioning from a small gathering space in a garage, which began with about 25 people, to a more comprehensive ministry center. In 2011, a new building was completed, featuring amenities such as a coffee house, library, study spaces, and a fully equipped kitchen. The current facility can accommodate up to 125 people, offering a game room with a pool table and other communal areas.

Mission and Activities

Front Porch's mission is centered around creating a space where every person and moment matter. It achieves this by hosting various events, including free coffee and espresso during the day, a free meal every Wednesday, and other activities like card making, walks, open mic nights, and quarterly camping trips. These events are designed to promote social interaction and community building among students.

The organization is supported by donations from local churches and community members, as well as student volunteers. Despite being a Christian-based organization, Front Porch is open to everyone, emphasizing inclusivity and welcoming students from all backgrounds without obligations. It currently has over 140 student volunteers who contribute to its operations by serving drinks, managing facilities, and participating in events.

Leadership

Joel Drenckpohl has served as the Executive Director of Front Porch since 2013. He has a background in church ministry and client management. The organization also includes an Associate Director, Dominique Floyd, and other staff members who are integral to its daily operations.

Legal Status

Front Porch holds a 501(c)(3) status as a tax-exempt nonprofit, operating under a group exemption granted by the IRS. This designation allows the organization to focus on its community service efforts without the need for individual tax exemption filings.

Impact

Front Porch has become a popular gathering spot for students from Cal Poly and Cuesta College, attracting hundreds of visitors daily. It provides a unique space where students can engage in both academic activities and social events, fostering a sense of community and belonging. The organization's commitment to radical inclusivity has made it a vital part of the local student scene.
