Conservation Fisheries, Inc.
Conservation Fisheries, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of aquatic biodiversity in rivers and streams across the United States. Founded in 1986 and formally incorporated in 1992, the organization operates as a captive fish propagation facility with a focus on non-game species.
Mission and Activities
Conservation Fisheries, Inc. (CFI) primarily aims to restore fish populations that have declined due to human activities. It specialises in propagating over 80 species of non-game fish, many of which are rare and imperiled, particularly in the southeastern United States. Species include darters, minnows, and madtoms. The organization works closely with federal and state agencies, as well as other conservation groups, to maintain and enhance freshwater biodiversity.
The conservation process involves collecting fish eggs, hatching them, raising the juveniles, and releasing them back into their historic range. Additionally, CFI sometimes propagates fish for use as hosts for endangered freshwater mussels or for various research purposes. While they do not undertake habitat restoration, they provide advice to partners engaged in these efforts based on their observations of fish populations in the wild.
Operations
CFI's facility is unique in that it uses filtered municipal water and recirculating systems for fish propagation, unlike traditional hatcheries that often rely on natural water sources. The organization is headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee, but its impact extends across the southeast, as well as into parts of the southeast and northeast regions, including Missouri, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, and New York.
Funding and Financials
Conservation Fisheries relies heavily on donations, with contributions making up a significant portion of its revenue. In recent years, contributions have accounted for approximately 80% to 90% of total revenue. The organization also generates income from program services. As of its latest financial reports, CFI had a revenue of about $700,000, with expenses totaling approximately $610,000, and total assets valued at $1.06 million.
Volunteer and Community Support
CFI encourages volunteer participation, providing opportunities for students and community members to engage in conservation efforts. Volunteers gain valuable experience in fish breeding programs, which can be beneficial for future career opportunities or graduate school applications.
Tax-Exempt Status
As a registered 501(c)(3) organization, donations to Conservation Fisheries are tax-deductible.
