History and Vision
Operación San Andrés was founded by Dr. Luis A. Campos and his wife Ruth, with a vision to serve the underserved community of Collique, located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains on the outskirts of Lima, Peru.
Programs
Health & Wellness
- Health Care: Provides medical, dental, and eye care services during biannual mission trips, offering medications and eyeglasses free of charge. Telemedicine access is available throughout the year.
- Nutrition: Offers well-balanced meals for children through the Educational Enrichment Program, which is often the only nutritious meal they receive daily. Additionally, OSA sponsors nutrition and cooking classes for families.
- Women's Health & Safety: Combats domestic violence and mental abuse through education and training for women, enhancing their mental health, self-esteem, and marketable skills.
Family Support
- Healthy Families: Conducts classes on parenting, marriage enrichment, and home management. The organization also organizes recreational and cultural outings to foster positive family bonding.
- Christian Fellowship: Promotes Christian values through all programs, maintaining Luz de Esperanza Church for spiritual support and community building.
Educational & Cultural Enrichment
- Provides educational enrichment programs teaching math, reading, writing, and computer skills to children. The curriculum includes fitness, hygiene, social skills, and mental health. Additional activities include music, drama classes, and cultural field trips.
Community Improvement
- Microenterprise: Supports the formation of microenterprises to help families achieve financial stability through skills like budgeting and business management.
- Vocational Training: Offers skills such as baking, sewing, and jewelry making, primarily focused on women but expanding to recent high school graduates and other young adults.
- Construction: Builds or renovates houses annually to provide improved living conditions for Collique residents.
Operations and Financial Structure
Operación San Andrés relies on donations from individuals, churches, and other organizations. The organization maintains low overhead costs to ensure the majority of funds are allocated directly to community programs.
Partnerships and Impact
Operación San Andrés collaborates with various groups to support its mission, including partnerships with soup kitchens in Collique to address food insecurity, especially exacerbated by the global pandemic. The organization also works with community members to establish Ollas Comunes (Common Pots), grassroots community kitchens providing meals and fostering social solidarity.
